Former Deputy U.S. Attorney General Larry Thompson has been appointed to monitor Volkswagen AG to ensure the automobile manufacturer complies with the conditions of its criminal plea and a separate civil consent decree stemming from the company’s sales of diesel vehicles with software that circumvented U.S. emissions tests.

Thompson, former general counsel at soft drink giant Pepsico and a former U.S. attorney in Atlanta, will serve as independent compliance monitor and auditor, overseeing for an anticipated three years Volkswagen’s corporate compliance with the terms of both its criminal plea agreement and a separate civil consent order, the U.S. Justice Department announced Friday.
