Former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson is pulling together a crack team of attorneys to assist him in his new job monitoring Volkswagen AG’s compliance with the terms of the company’s criminal plea agreement with federal prosecutors.

Thompson, counsel to Atlanta-based Finch McCranie, has been named as an independent monitor to oversee Volkswagen corporate reforms following the discovery of the company’s long-running scheme to sell diesel vehicles that contained software designed to circumvent U.S. emissions tests. After leaving the Justice Department and before returning to Atlanta, Thompson was general counsel and senior vice president for government affairs at PepsiCo.
