The city of LaGrange is preparing to fight a civil rights lawsuit alleging discriminatory practices that deprive the homes of African-Americans and Latinos of basic utility services.

“The plaintiffs seek relief under the disparate impact component of the Fair Housing Act, which is a theory of recovery that was only endorsed by the U.S. Supreme Court in a recent decision in 2015 and is extremely limited in scope,” LaGrange City Attorney Jeffrey Todd told Daily Report. “One of the policies that are attacked has been in effect for well over a decade. It was passed in 2004. And the other has been in effect for multiple decades.”
