Delta Air Lines’ new chief executive officer, Richard H. Anderson, started his business career as an in-house lawyer 20 years ago, but had he not gotten along well with his neighbors in Texas, he might still be practicing criminal law.

In 1987, Anderson was a prosecutor in Harris County Criminal Court in Texas, and he and his wife, Susan, lived across the street from a Harvard Law School graduate who was the general counsel of Houston-based Continental Airlines, Ben Hirst.
