Laverne Lewis Gaskins says that, as a child, she had a fleeting interest in becoming a lawyer because of something she saw in a magazine. But she never saw anyone who looked like her who was a lawyer, which prompted her not to aggressively pursue law initially. Gaskins earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Valdosta State University and worked as a high school guidance counselor before deciding to go to law school. Now she's back at Valdosta State as its general counsel.

Laverne Lewis Gaskins was born in Swainsboro, Ga., but never really lived there. Her father was a career military man, and her mother wanted to have her baby in her hometown. But the family traveled around the world with the U.S. Army. Among the places she remembers living is France.
“I spent a lot of my formative years traveling,” said Gaskins.
