When Starbucks Coffee Co. closed its 7,100 U.S. stores last month for retraining, it wasn’t just baristas who spent 3 1/2 hours refreshing their knowledge of how to aerate foam and recognize the three colors of a perfect shot of espresso. It was everyone. Even the lawyers.

Donise E. Brown, director of corporate counsel for real estate with Starbucks’ law and corporate affairs department based in Hollywood, Fla., was in Atlanta last week to attend the Leadership Institute for Women of Color Attorneys in Law & Business Inc. Brown, who spoke in a workshop on the “role of the corporate attorney,” said afterward that she finished work in her office at 5 p.m. on Feb. 26, and then made coffee until 9 p.m. It wasn’t the first time. Like other employees of the Seattle-based company, she went to work in a caf� first to learn the business before going to work in her job with the legal department.
