Sonya W. Middleton, senior counsel for Cox Communications, grew up in Waynesboro, Ga., about 30 miles from Augusta, and went to Emory University. It was there, while answering a call for a help line and referring the person to Atlanta Legal Aid Society, that she became interested in law. She saw it as a way to help people.
During law school at Duke, she spent two summers at the Augusta and Atlanta offices of Knox & Zacks, which later was acquired by Kilpatrick Stockton. The firm hired her after graduation, and she practiced health care law there for four years.
