The city of Atlanta has asked the Georgia Supreme Court to decide whether the boards of trustees for three city employee pension funds may replace the city government’s financial managers and lawyers with help from the private sector.

The boards of trustees oversee pension funds for police officers, firefighters and general employees. In 2004 those funds were worth more than $1.8 billion, according to city financial statements.
