Clifford Chance's Revenues Fall in the Americas

It's been a tumultuous fiscal year for Clifford Chance, and the extent of the firm's financial troubles is clearer now with the release of its second annual report. Clifford Chance saw gross revenues fall by 5 percent, lost its status as the world's largest law firm by revenues -- a distinction that now goes to Linklaters -- and saw profits drop by a massive 37 percent. The new report shows the firm's revenues in New York, Sao Paulo and Washington D.C. slipped from $344.3 million to $265.19 million.

A Florida appeals court threw out one of the largest verdicts in U.S. history Wednesday when it overturned a $1.58 billion judgment against financial behemoth Morgan Stanley. The decision tossed both the $604.3 million economic damages award and the $850 million punitive award handed down by a Palm Beach Circuit Court jury. The court found that an expert for billionaire Ronald Perelman did not correctly calculate the amount of damages his company suffered due to fraud allegedly committed by Morgan Stanley.

The biotechnology industry's recent full-court press to let firms owned by venture capitalists qualify for federal small-business grants has found an ally in Dr. Elias Zerhouni, head of the National Institutes of Health. Although most NIH awards go to small biotechnology companies, an SBA judge ruled in 2003 that companies controlled by venture capital firms are disqualified. Thus, many biotech companies cannot get grants because they tend to be majority-owned by such venture capital firms.
