Vice President Joe Biden on Oct. 21 ended months of speculation about whether he would seek the Democratic nomination for president, saying the “window on mounting a realistic campaign” had closed.

Speaking from the White House Rose Garden, Biden said his family was ready for a run, after grieving the loss of his son, former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden.

“Well, that's where the Bidens are today. Thank God. Beau—Beau is our inspiration,” he said, flanked by his wife, Jill Biden, and President Obama. “Unfortunately, I believe we're out of time, the time necessary to mount a winning campaign for the nomination.”
