Less than two years after a federal judge effectively wiped out thousands of lawsuits over Zantac, a legal showdown over the recalled heartburn medication is flaring up in state courts.

On May 23, the first verdict in the nation over Zantac came out in Illinois, where jurors in Chicago’s Cook County Circuit Court sided with drug manufacturers GlaxoSmithKline and Boehringer Ingelheim. More trials are planned in Illinois, California and Pennsylvania against the same drug manufacturers. Pfizer and Sanofi-Aventis, the other Zantac manufacturers, have settled most of their cases.
