The Delaware General Assembly was set to reconvene Tuesday, and lawmakers are finding before them a slew of criminal law proposals ranging from reforms to tougher sentencing for some gun crimes and the long-sought-after repeal of the death penalty.

Perhaps chief among the measures is a bill championed by state Attorney General Matt Denn that would revise the state's habitual offender law to do away with automatic life sentences for some repeat felons and allow more discretion for judges in sentencing.

The bill is a centerpiece of a package of criminal justice reforms Denn pitched at a meeting of the Wilmington Rotary Club in October, and it represents the first time an attorney general has committed the Delaware Department of Justice to seeking changes to the state's “three strikes and you're out” policy.
