As the Delaware General Assembly fast approaches its deadline for producing a budget, some Delaware lawyers are expressing concern with what they say could be crippling cuts to legal aid services to indigent residents.
Last month, an influential panel of lawmakers proposed deep, across-the-board cuts in government spending to help close a roughly $400 million gap in the state's budget. Among the recommendations was the elimination of a $600,000 line item that is used to fund three civil legal aid organizations that provide representation to the Delaware's poor.
The proposal from the Joint Finance Committee would amount to an 8.5 percent reduction in total funding for Community Legal Aid Society Inc., Delaware Volunteer Legal Services and Legal Services Corporation of Delaware, which rely on a patchwork of sources for $7 million in financial backing each year.
