The Delaware Senate confirmed Francis J. "Pete" Jones, a Morris James partner, as a Delaware Superior Court judge May 27.

Jones will sit in New Castle County.

Jones, who has practiced law for nearly 37 years at Morris James, was nominated by Gov. John Carney in March to fill the seat vacated by now-Resident Judge Charlie Butler of the Delaware Superior Court, who replaced former Resident Judge Richard R. Cooch following Cooch's January retirement.

"I am honored by the governor's nomination and humbled by the Senate's confirmation," Jones said Tuesday. "I welcome the opportunity to serve the people of the state of Delaware."

Jones chaired Morris James' personal injury group and served as an executive committee member for the firm. He obtained both his bachelor's and law degrees from the Catholic University of America and clerked for the Delaware Supreme Court; Goldman, Phillips, Nichols, Pederson and Hurtt; and the National Labor Relations Board.

Morris James Managing Partner Keith Donovan said while he's sad to see Jones leave the firm, it's an honor to have one of his colleagues selected as a Superior Court judge.

Butler, Jones' predecessor, served as a Superior Court Judge in New Castle County beginning in 2012 and was previously Delaware's chief deputy attorney general, a prosecutor for the Delaware Department of Justice and an assistant district attorney for the city of Philadelphia.

Butler said Tuesday he looks forward to continuing to work in Delaware's court system during an unconventional time period.

Throughout his career as an attorney, Jones has been a member of the Delaware Board of Bar Examiners and the Delaware Trial Lawyers Association, a member and chair of the Delaware Supreme Court Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection and twice the American Board of Trial Advocates' Delaware chapter president.

Jones was awarded the 2019 Delaware State Bar Association First State Distinguished Service Award, the Justice Gene Franchini Golden Gavel Award in 2017, the Middle States Counsel for Social Studies Distinguished Service Award in 2008 and the DSBA Distinguished Mentoring Award in 2005.

Jones has been involved with the Delaware Mock Trial Program since it began in 1993 and served on the National Mock Trial Competition's board of directors for 23 years.
