According to Boston-based Web Marketing Association's Internet Standards Assessment Report (ISAR), legal Web sites tend to perform on par with other industry sites in terms of design, yet fail to deliver in innovation.

The ISAR study, released March 22, provides industry benchmarks for Web site development and is based on data collected from 9,748 Web site evaluations in more than 80 industries.

According to the report's Legal Industry Benchmark Results, legal sites score well in terms of design, copywriting and ease of use, however, score lowest in innovation and use of technology.

“Legal Web sites have slightly underperformed each of the 3-year criteria benchmarks,” said William Rice, president of the Web Marketing Association in a statement. “The top legal Web sites are more than just brochureware. They provide meaningful industry news and analysis within their various practice areas. Online is one of the best ways a law firm can market itself without appearing to do so.”

The report ranked Frost Brown Todd's Web site as the legal industry's best site in 2005. Past winners include Pierce Atwood, Pepper Hamilton and Lane Powell Spears Lubersky.
