The University of California is looking to replace its outgoing general counsel. Based in Oakland, the general counsel has a dual reporting relationship to the Regents and to the president of the university, and provides proactive professional advice on critical strategic, legal and public policy issues. The outgoing general counsel estimates that he spends approximately 25 percent of his time handling matters relating to the Regents and approximately 25 percent of his time handling matters of concern to the president or other senior executives, including campus and system-wide offices. The remainder of his time is spent dealing with the many complex legal issues that arise in the context of the university's mission and with the overall management of the legal function. The general counsel is part of the senior management team and interacts closely with the university's senior officers.
