Diversity programs won honors for three corporate law departments and a law firm at the Minority Corporate Counsel Association's Mid-Atlantic Region Diversity Dinner on June 13, while seven employers received “best practices” awards from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at a ceremony June 14.

The MCCA Employer of Choice Awards went to the legal departments of AOL LLC, Discovery Communications Inc., and Comcast Cable Inc. They were chosen for demonstrating a commitment to diversity and for creating and maintaining an inclusive workplace.

Also honored at the MCCA dinner was the Washington, D.C.-based law firm of Dickstein, Shapiro, Morin and Oshinsky. The firm received the Thomas L. Sager Award for demonstrating sustained commitment to improving the hiring, retention and promotion of minority attorneys.

“We are proud of the positive impact of our efforts, but also understand that we must continue to work to advance diversity in our firm and in the market. We have not reached the finish line,” Managing Partner Michael Nannes said in a statement.

The EEOC Freedom to Compete Awards were presented by Cari M. Dominguez, chair of the EEOC, in a ceremony at the commission's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The honorees were: McDonald's Corp. of Oak Brook, Ill.; Phoenix-based Arizona Public Service Co.; Public Service Electric & Gas Co. of Newark, N.J.; North Broward Hospital District of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Fluor Corp. of Sugar Land, Texas; and the U.S. Department of Defense.

“Ultimately, the Freedom to Compete Awards are about setting examples,” Dominguez said in a statement. “The best way to promote access and inclusion is to learn from one another.”
