A federal judge will allow American Airlines go ahead with a lawsuit against Google Inc. that alleges the Internet giant infringed on its trademarks and deceived consumers through its sale of keyword ads that use the airline's trademarked names.

Google had asked District Judge John H. McBryde to throw out a lawsuit that American filed in August, but McBryde issued his ruling at the end of October without explaining his decision.

The Fort Worth-based airline complained that Google lets rivals pay to have links to their sites appear when computer users search Google for American trademark terms, such as AAdvantage.

In the past, Google officials have said its search policy balances the interests of trademark owners and consumers.

This is not the first time Google is being sued over its use of trademarked terms in paid searches. Two years ago, Google won a similar case filed by insurer Geico Inc., but other companies have continued to file lawsuits against Google with the same claims.
