A federal judge has ruled, in the ongoing case involving The Graham Co. and its former employee who left to join a competitor, that a verdict in favor of the company wasn't excessive. The $18.9 million may go up if Graham files for pre- and post-judgment interest.

The case involved Thomas Haughey, a Graham sales professional who left the company in 1991 to join comptetitor USI Holding Corp. Upon his departure, Haughey took two manuals Graham developed to train its sales people to tailor their proposals. Haughey copied the manuals and distributed them to USI employees. USI went on to generate hundreds of new customers. Graham filed suit in 2005 against Haughey and USI, claiming copyright infringement.
