Amazon.com Inc. now has someone whose sole job is to look out for your privacy. The online company has finally joined its fellow 500-pound gorillas of the Internet—Facebook Inc., Apple Inc. and Google Inc.—in hiring a privacy counsel.

Nuala O'Connor will join Amazon as vice president and associate general counsel, compliance and privacy. She was previously chief privacy leader at General Electric Co., and before that served as chief privacy officer for the Department of Homeland Security.

With any luck, O'Connor will be able to keep Amazon out of hot water, like it experienced when it released its web browser, Silk, in conjunction with its Kindle Fire tablet. Concern abounded that the browser allowed Amazon to collect too much information about its users' surfing habits.

For more on O'Connor's appointment and Amazon's privacy issues, see the Wall Street Journal.
