Noted gay icon Madonna will have to wait a little longer for a hearing to decide if she broke a St. Petersburg, Russia anti-homosexual law. The district court rescheduled the hearing for Nov. 7.
The pop star is facing a 333 million ruble ($10.6 million) lawsuit from nine St. Petersburg residents who claim that Madonna promoted homosexuality during her Aug. 9 concert, and violated their cultural traditions. The venue, Peterburgsky Sports and Concert Complex, and concert organizer PMI Corp. were also named as defendants in the lawsuit.
The law in question is relatively new, having been signed by St. Petersburg Governer Georgy Poltavchenko on March 7. It outlaws lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender “propaganda,” with the goal of keeping minors from thinking that heterosexual and homosexual relationships are equal in society.
