The first Hispanic and second female judge in the history of the Court of Appeals will join Greenberg Traurig's New York office, the law firm announced yesterday.

Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick, who stepped down from her judicial position on Dec. 31, 2012, after reaching the mandatory retirement age, will join the firm's litigation and appellate practices on Jan. 14 as of counsel.

Ciparick told Thomson Reuters that she looks forward to honing her writing and advocacy skills and mentoring junior lawyers at the firm. In a statement, Greenberg Traurig CEO Richard Rosenbaum said Ciparick's “hard work, unassuming nature and commitment to service” exemplify the firm's culture.

Ciparick was born in Manhattan to parents who emigrated from Puerto Rico. She graduated from St. John's University School of Law in 1967. She became the first Hispanic female trial judge in New York in 1978 and was later elected to state Supreme Court in Manhattan. Former Governor Mario Cuomo appointed Ciparick to the Court of Appeals in 1993, and Former Governor Eliot Spitzer reappointed her in 2007.
