NBCUniversal announced yesterday that it is naming Kimberly D. Harris executive vice president and general counsel. Harris will assume the role on Sept. 3.

Harris joins the broadcasting company from Davis Polk & Wardwell, where she was a partner in the firm's litigation department. At Davis Polk, Harris handled matters for clients such as investigations by the Justice Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission and Congress. Also, from 2010 to 2012, she served in the White House Counsel's Office, most recently as deputy counsel and deputy assistant to the president. 

“With extensive experience, proven leadership ability, and a track record of success, Kim is a great choice to guide our Law Department,” said NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke. “I look forward to working closely with her in the months and years ahead.” 

Harris takes over the position after long-time GC Rick Cotton decided to step down. Cotton, who first started working as NBC's GC in 1989, announced in 2012 that he would be stepping down from his post this year. Cotton (who made pro bono a priority in his department) is taking on the role of senior counsel for IP protection. He will be working closely with the anti-piracy team at NBCUniversal and Comcast on anti-piracy policy and advocacy.

“Rick Cotton's many contributions have earned him the gratitude of this company, and the respect of our industry,” Burke said. “I am pleased that Rick will continue to lead our efforts regarding digital theft and counterfeiting, and that he will help ensure a smooth transition.”
