As an industry traditionally ruled by men, law has come a long way over the years hiring and honoring more and more talented women. In fact, just last month, six large law firms earned a coveted spot on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For list, and the majority of those firms employ more women than men.

One of the many esteemed women in law, U.S. Steel Corporation General Counsel and SVP of governmental affairs Suzanne Rich Folsom, has been recognized for her work in corporate governance and compliance and named “Leader of the Year” at the 2014 Women in Compliance Awards in London.

The Women in Compliance Awards are the first to recognize the achievements of women in regulatory compliance leadership roles. The awards are judged by a panel of senior professionals from the United Kingdom, the U.S., the European Union as well as global compliance and regulatory sector.

“The international recognition that Suzanne has received for her work in corporate governance and compliance is one of many reasons that we are fortunate to have her on our executive team,” said Mario Longhi, president and CEO of U.S. Steel, in a statement.

Throughout her career, Folsom has worked in many organizations to transform their legal and compliance programs into gold standards. Joining other nominees from Google, AECOM and Novo Nordisk, Folsom was nominated for “Compliance Champion of the Year” as well as “Women in Compliance Award's Leader of the Year.”

In addition, she and her programs have previously been recognized by Corporate Secretary Magazine, Inside Counsel Magazine, Ethisphere Institute and the Washington Metropolitan Area Association of Corporate Counsel for their innovation in corporate governance and in-house legal matters.

Longhi continued, “Her proven leadership in the area of business transformation and creating best-in-class legal and compliance organizations will serve our company well as we continue on our transformational journey.”

Folsom will take part in the Women, Influence & Power in Law event in Washington, DC in September. The conference is a forum for women in-house and outside counsel to discuss current legal topics and network with rising stars.
