Herbert Smith advised British American Tobacco on its recently unveiled £15bn acquisition of rival Rothmans International. The deal closed on 11 January.
Edward Walker-Arnott, Tim Bellis and James Palmer led the team. Rothmans, owned by Richemont and Rembrandt, was advised by Slaughter and May, led by Michael Pescod and Oliver Wareham
Allen & Overy, led by Alan Paul, advised Allied Carpets Group on its disposal of 27 stores to Carpetright in a cash deal worth £12.6m. A further £700,000 was due to be paid this week. Harris Carpets and Harris Furnishings are included in the sale.
Travers Smith Braithwaite, led by Julian Bass and Oliver Barnes, represented Carpetright.
Lovell White Durrant, headed by John Young, advised Australian-based life assurers AMP on its acquisition of UK life assurer NPI.
NPI demutualised as part of the deal and its members are set to benefit by about £2.7bn.

Paisner & Co advised Enid Blyton Ltd, the subsidiary of Chorion, in an alliance agreement regarding exploitation rights of Noddy and associated characters with BBC Worldwide.
Partner Laurence Kaye led the team assisted by Mimi Curran. BBC Worldwide used its in-house lawyers, including Richard Dalby and Nick Lowe. The sum was not disclosed.
Clifford Chance's Frankfurt office worked closely with the in-house legal team at the Post Office on its acquisition of German Parcel which was advised by Oppenhof & Radler's Jochen Winter.
It is the first £20m-plus Post Office acquisition following the easing of government imposed restrictions. Christopher Kellett and Bernd Meyer-Witting led the Clifford Chance team.
The sum was undisclosed, but is reported to have been up to £375m.
Philip Goldenberg of SJ Berwin & Co advised Fyffes Group, the fresh produce distributor, in its acquisition of a stake in Capespan International Holdings.
Fyffes paid £24m, financed through an issue of ordinary shares, giving it a 10% stake in the company. Pinsent Curtis' Jeremy Phillips acted for the Capespan Group.
Spencer Summerfield led a team of four at Travers Smith Braithwaite acting for NTL on its acquisition of Eastern Group Telecoms from Eastern Group. The deal was worth £91m. Eversheds represented Eastern group.

The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
