Allen & Overy has named London banking partner Tony Humphrey as the new managing partner of its Moscow office.

Humphrey will take up the post from early 2007, replacing incumbent Peter Timchur, who is expected to return to the UK in July next year.

Humphrey's practice is based around energy, leveraged finance and structured finance, including Islamic finance. He has advised on project financing in the energy, utilities, petrochemical and infrastructure sectors. He has been a partner at the magic circle firm since 1981.

Recently, Humphrey was part of the team advising Severstal on its proposed €46bn (£31bn) merger with Arcelor and has advised on several road and infrastructure projects in Portugal, Croatia, Poland and Serbia.

A&O's Russia arm was opened in 1993. Timchur, a banking partner with a particular emphasis on project finance work, has been at the helm for six years. The office recently advised ABN Amro, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley on the $13bn (£6.9bn) loan for Gazprom – thought to be the largest loan ever arranged for an emerging markets company.
