East Coast firms Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and Covington & Burling have bagged the lead advisory roles on Russian steel giant Evraz's $2.3bn (£1.2bn) acquisition of Oregon Steel Mills.

Cleary New York corporate partners William Groll and Neil Whoriskey led the team advising Evraz.

The deal is one of a number of notable mandates on which Cleary has advised Evraz, Russia's top steel producer by volume.

Other roles the New York leader has bagged for the Moscow-based company include advising on its $422m (£218m) London initial public offering in June 2005.

This is the first time Washington DC-based Covington has represented Oregon Steel. The firm fielded a team out of its Washington DC and New York offices, led by New York-based corporate partner JD Weinberg.

Oregon firm Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt also advised the target, a company it has represented for the last 17 years.
