Clifford Chance (CC) and InBev's legal team led an array of teams that scooped the top prizes at the Legal Week Awards 2006.
CC was named International Firm of the Year, after a period that has seen it manage a major turnaround, readdressing issues of three years ago including plummeting profits and a disordered US practice. CC won the award ahead of shortlisted US firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, which was highly commended.
InBev's legal team was named as the Global Legal Department of the Year after strong feedback from advisers on the team's work in creating a cohesive department following years of rapid growth.
The practices were among 23 winners at the prestigious ceremony, which saw nearly 1,000 of the UK's leading business lawyers gather at a ceremony in central London on 29 November.
Other major awards saw Osborne Clarke named UK Firm of the Year on the back of a robust financial performance, while Shoosmiths was named Regional Firm of the Year.
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer took the top practice award, winning the M&A Team of the Year after 12 months in which the firm has dominated Europe's reviving deal markets.
Simmons & Simmons landed the Finance Team of the Year award after drawing praise for its hedge fund work and structured finance practice, as well as strong feedback from clients.
Herbert Smith took home the award for Property Team of the Year, while Clyde & Co won the litigation award.
Individual awards went to Tony Angel from Linklaters, who bagged the Managing Partner of the Year prize, while General Counsel of the Year was awarded to Terry Miller from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG).
The City of London Law Society Lifetime Achievement award went to Janet Gaymer, for her contribution to employment law and her achievements as Simmons' senior partner.
The awards, hosted by comedian and actor Rob Brydon, drew on independent interviews with corporate counsel and senior private practitioners as part of research conducted by Legal Week's editorial team.
