The Guardian split its legal team into two this month, creating new positions of heads of legal for Sarah Davis and Nuala Cosgrove.

Following the appointment of legal director Siobhan Butterworth to the position of reader's editor in December, Guardian News and Media Group managing director Tim Brooks and editor Alan Rusbridger decided to divide the news group's legal function into separate editorial and commercial divisions.

Brooks said: "The creation of these two divisions and our increased investment in legal services recognises the value we place in this area. We are fortunate to be able to draw on the talent and expertise of Nuala and Sarah to drive these two divisions forward."

When she takes up her new role in April, Davis will head up the commercial legal team and report to Brooks. She joined the company in 2000 as a commercial lawyer and was formerly legal counsel at technology company NDS.

Cosgrove, legal manager at The Guardian and former intellectual property counsel at Burberry, is taking charge of the editorial legal function and will report to Rusbridger.

The current legal team of seven is set to grow with one new recruit about to join the editorial group and two being recruited to commercial, bringing the total number of personnel, including support staff, in each division to six.
