DLA Piper has bagged another new partner for its London arm as the transatlantic giant presses on with its expansion plans in the capital.

Huw Roberts joins the firm as a partner in the technology, media and commercial (TMC) practice after a six-year spell in Monaco as general counsel to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the world governing body for track and field athletics. Prior to moving in-house, Roberts, a regulatory and sports law specialist, worked as part of the litigation and arbitration practice at City giant Herbert Smith.

He will now relocate to London, where he will handle regulatory and disciplinary proceedings for DLA Piper's sports practice, part of the firm's 106-lawyer TMC group.

Working in tandem with London-based sports law partner Mark Gay, Roberts will act for a roster of bluechip clients that includes The Football Association (FA), Cricket Australia and the FA Premier League.

DLA Piper global TMC chief Simon Levine commented: "The experience and understanding that [Roberts] gained while at the IAAF will help our sports practice to maintain its position as the leading practice in the UK and internationally."

The latest hire continues efforts by DLA Piper to grow its City practice, which was swelled at the end of last year by several notable hires including Denton Wilde Sapte dispute resolution partner Philip Chong and planning lawyer Marnix Elsenaar, who joined as a partner from Herbert Smith.
