Olswang has secured a landmark radio contract for new client UTV on the auction of broadcasting rights for the FA Premier League.

The City firm advised UTV, the ITV franchise for Northern Ireland, which has secured a broadcasting contract for one of seven 32-game Premier League packages for subsidiary talkSPORT.

Olswang head of media, communications and technology David Zeffman advised on the deal, which sees talkSPORT – the UK's only national commercial speech radio station – become the first commercial radio station to be awarded a Premier League broadcasting package. Olswang was invited to pitch for the work against a number of other firms. The Premier League held an auction in September and chose the winners in October. The contracts were signed off last month.

The deal will allow talkSPORT to broadcast football games live on Saturdays at 3pm for three seasons from 2007-08, alongside the BBC, which has been awarded the other six packages. Previously, the BBC has been awarded the broadcasting rights for all Premier League matches, but the European Commission has recently ruled that exclusive broadcasting rights should not be granted to any one bidder in an effort to increase competition among service providers.

DLA Piper media partner Nick Fitzpatrick advised the Premier League. The Premier League also instructed DLA Piper last year when it held a £1.7bn auction of its TV broadcasting rights. On that occasion, Olswang advised Setanta Sports on its £392m acquisition of two live rights packages, ending the Premier League's 14-year exclusive agreement with BSkyB.

Earlier in 2006, talkSPORT won live rights to the 2006 World Cup as well as the Champions League and UEFA Cup finals.
