The Free Representation Unit (FRU) – the largest provider of pro bono advocacy services for UK social security and employment law – has appointed a new chief executive, the group announced today (28 February).

Former PricewaterhouseCoopers tax partner Clive Tulloch started in his position at the FRU towards the end of last year, taking over from former director Kelly Essery in the role.

Tulloch, whose term as chief executive has no fixed limit, will focus on maintaining continuity and developing ideas of the managing student committee.

The FRU was established in 1972 and made up of volunteer law students, pupils, junior barristers and solicitors, handles 600-800 cases a year on a pro bono basis.

Tulloch commented: "We are providing a much-needed social service and providing invaluable experience for young lawyers at the same time."

He added: "[I will] work with the agencies who refer cases to us to enhance the service we provide and, above all, to try to reduce the number of cases that lack of resource prevents us from handling."
