Former Sony BMG senior in-house lawyer Alasdair George has joined ex-Mishcon de Reya partner David Glick at his media law and investment boutique, Edge.

George, who joins Edge next week, had been with the music giant for 13 years before leaving Sony BMG last autumn to start his own consultancy group.

While at Sony he oversaw UK and Irish aspects of Sony's 2004 tie-up with Bertelsmann Music Group as well as its dispute with artist George Michael in 2003. His clients from private practice include Blur, Happy Mondays, Spandau Ballet and Stereo MCs.

He was replaced in October as vice-president of legal and business affairs by former Red Inc general counsel Michael Smith.

Speaking to Legal Week, Glick said: "Alasdair will effectively be joining us as the third partner or director at the company. This is a multidisciplinary business and we have a bigger canvas on which to paint than lawyers working purely in the field of music, which is narrowing as a role."

Edge was set up by Glick – the former head of media and entertainment at Mishcons and founder of niche media firm Eatons – in 2004 to concentrate on the film, music, theatre, fashion, sport and television sectors.

Edge has since launched a corporate finance arm and raised £20m to float Edge Performance – the company's venture capital business – on the London Stock Exchange.
