Ashurst and Norton Rose have both announced a bumper crump of new partners, with Ashurst promoting 20 associates to partner from 1 May and Norton Rose making up 23.

The number of promotions constitutes a record for Ashurst, which made up 15 new partners globally last year, while Norton Rose promoted 22 lawyers to its partnership in 2006.

Eleven of Ashurst's new partners are in the City, with two apiece in Paris, Milan and Germany. Tokyo, Brussels and Dubai each benefit from one new partner. Eight of the promotions come in corporate, with the rest spread across the firm in practice areas including litigation, real estate, finance, tax and energy, transport and infrastructure.

The promotions are similarly spread at Norton Rose, which also promoted 11 new partners in London. The remaining dozen are in international offices in Dubai, Asia and continental Europe.

Ten of the new partners are in Norton Rose's key banking department, with a further six in corporate finance, three in dispute resolution, two in competition and one apiece in tax and employee benefits.

The news comes with several City firms responding to buoyant market conditions by making up record numbers of new partners, including City rival Lovells, which promoted a new high of 31 to its partnership this year.

Commenting on his firm's latest partnership round, Ashurst senior partner Geoffrey Green said: "This year's promotions reflect the period of significant success and growth we have had over recent years. I would like to congratulate each of the new partners and wish them every success in the future."
