Allen & Overy (A&O) has strengthened its Moscow offering with the hire of Latham & Watkins capital markets partner Varun Gupta, it was announced today (16 April).

Gupta, who had been with Latham since 2003 after joining from New York firm Cravath Swaine & Moore, focuses on initial public offerings and debt transactions.

A&O opened its Moscow branch in 1993 and now has around 30 lawyers based in the Russian capital.

The hire of Gupta comes after the City giant announced last September that veteran London banking partner Tony Humphrey was to take over as Moscow managing partner from Peter Timchur.

Humphrey, whose practice concentrates on energy, leveraged finance and structured finance, including Islamic finance, became a partner at A&O in 1981. He has advised on project financing in the energy, utilities, petrochemical and infrastructure sectors.

Commenting on the latest hire, Humphrey said: "Varun's appointment underlines the strategic importance we are placing on the development of our Russian and CIS practice."
