Dewey Ballantine has hired Beijing corporate partner Hugh Scogin from former merger suitor Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe, the New York firm announced today (17 May).

The arrival of Scogin – who focuses on transactional work and was formerly a partner in the China practice group of the now-defunct Coudert Brothers takes the lawyer headcount in the office to four.

The hire is the latest in a string of partner-level recruits by Dewey as it seeks to rebuild its practice following a slew of departures after its much-vaunted merger bid with West Coast giant Orrick collapsed.

Other notable recent additions for Dewey include the Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer duo of Italian capital markets partner Carlo Kostka and litigation partner Alastair Crawford, who joined Dewey's London office.

Orrick has also seen a string of partner departures since the merger talks collapsed. Top 10 City outfit Norton Rose was among the firms to benefit when it picked up respected Orrick Paris tax head Stephane Salou earlier this month.
