Gleiss Lutz, the German ally of top 10 City firm Herbert Smith, has elected corporate partner Rainer Loges as its new managing partner following an election earlier this month.

Loges will take over as managing partner from Stuttgart-based employment partner Martin Diller when his four-year term ends in January 2008.

Loges saw off the challenge of Frankfurt corporate partner Alexander Schwarz in a partnership vote, held on 12 May, to claim the role.

Loges, who joined Gleiss Lutz in 1996, focuses on M&A work and has been based in Munich since 2001. He previously spent three years in the firm's Prague office.

News of Loges' coronation comes with Herbert Smith currently gearing up for a high-level review of its international alliance, which could strengthen ties between the City giant, Gleiss Lutz and Benelux leader Stibbe.

Spanish independent Cuatrecasas is considering joining the network, which is also likely to target Italy in coming months.
