Office supplies giant Staples has named in-house lawyer Kristin Campbell as its new general counsel.

Campbell, who has been at the stationery giant for 13 years, was promoted from deputy general counsel to general counsel on Wednesday (6 June) and will now report directly to Ron Sargent, the company's chairman and chief executive.

Campbell, a former lawyer at US firm Goodwin Procter, previously looked after the company's international legal matters in Europe, Asia and South America.

She replaces outgoing general counsel Jack VanWoerkom, who announced earlier this month that he was to leave Staples after four years.

VanWoerkom is set to join Home Depot, the world's largest home improvement chain, on 25 June, replacing former general counsel Frank Fernandez, who left the company in February.

In a statement, Sargent said: "Kristen is an outstanding and respected leader. She has done an excellent job of shaping the vision for the Staples legal team and will play an important part in supporting the company's growth in the future."

Staples is the world's largest office products company, with annual revenues of $18bn (£9bn) and more than 1,800 stores across 22 countries worldwide.
