Freshfields lines up against Links on £500m buy-out
Freshfields Bruckhaus Derringer has advised private equity house Hellman & Friedman on its £500m buy-out of UK software companies Computer Software Group and IRIS Software. Freshfields corporate partner David Sonter took the lead role while Linklaters partner Richard Youle (pictured) acted for the targets.
The deal is the second buy-out in a week for Freshfields, which also advised Cinven on its £1.44bn acquisition of private medical service BUPA. Corporate partner David Higgins led the Freshfields team on that deal, while Slaughter and May corporate partner Simon Robinson advised BUPA.
Ashurst leads on US buy-out houses' £4.2bn acquisition
Ashurst is acting for Silver Lake and TPG Capital on the investment firms' £4.2bn acquisition of communications business Avaya. Corporate associates Hanif Mohamed and Caspar von Schnurbein are leading the team for Ashurst. Weil Gotshal & Manges New York-based corporate partner Akiko Mikumo advised Avaya and Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom co-head of private equity Eileen Nugent is representing Avaya's board.
Olswang and Ashurst eat out on Strada restaurant sale
Olswang is advising longstanding client Richard Caring on both the sale of his Strada restaurant chain to restaurant operator Tragus and the acquisition of London-based leisure company Mark Birley Holdings. Corporate partners Tina Cowen and Graham Barber led on the two deals respectively. Ashurst corporate partner Gavin Gordon acted for Tragus and Macfarlanes corporate partner Charles Meek represented Mark Birley.
DLA Piper and Eversheds lead on £190m JJB Sports sale
DLA Piper has advised Dave Whelan on the sale of his £190m stake in JJB Sports to Icelandic financial group Exista and sports retailer Christopher Ronnie. Manchester-based corporate partner Jonathan Watkins led the DLA Piper team while Eversheds London corporate partner Stephen Nash represented Exista. Halliwells corporate partner Frank Shephard acted for Ronnie.

Apollo hands Paul Hastings £445m shopping centre deal
Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker has advised Apollo Real Estate on its £445m acquisition of the 160-acre Telford shopping centre in Shropshire. London-based real estate partners Mark Eagan and Emma Bucknall led for Paul Hastings.
Eagan and Bucknall have been some of Paul Hastings' most active London partners in recent months and advised Beacon Capital Partners on its £208m acquisition of 33 Grosvenor Place in January.
Dickie Dees enters flagship Silvertown Quays regen project
Dickinson Dees has advised the London Borough of Newham on its £1.5bn Silvertown Quays regeneration project, part of the Thames Gateway scheme. Planning partner Jocelyn Denton led the team for Dickinsons. Ashurst is acting for the developer and Stephenson Harwood environmental chief Michael Woods is advising the London Development Agency.
FINANCE
A&O and CC lead on latest sukuk programme
Allen & Overy (A&O) has advised Standard Chartered Bank as lead arranger on the launch of a £501m sukuk programme by Emirates Islamic Bank listed on the London Stock Exchange. Capital markets partner Roger Wedderburn-Day led the team for A&O and Clifford Chance Dubai-based capital markets partner Debashis Dey (pictured) acted for Emirates.
A&O is one of Standard Chartered's main advisers, alongside CC, Slaughter and May and Lovells.
Wragges scores housing bond mandate
Wragge & Co has advised Sanctuary Housing Association on a £51m ($100m) cross-border bond issue. Banking partner Paula Laird led the team for Wragges while Latham & Watkins corporate finance partner Ian Clarke acted for the private investors.
Sanctuary has been an active client for Wragges, with the national firm advising it on a multimillion-pound project in Sheffield in 2005.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
