"The problem isn't the disparity in pay between regional firms and City firms, but the disparity that exists within national firms between their City and regional offices. A solicitor at a regional firm can look at a US/magic circle firm and admit they work longer hours, have a different work culture and consequently are paid a premium for doing so. It's harder to make that admission (and accept that as justification) when you're a regional fee earner looking at City-based colleagues in the same firm.
