Hammonds has capitalised on its recent role in the £81.6m takeover of Manchester City Football Club, with the national law firm advising on the signing of former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson as the club's new manager.

The firm bagged the mandate after acting for takeover company UK Sports Investments Limited (UKSIL) – the buying vehicle backed by former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his family – on its acquisition of the Premier League club.

The latest deal, which was signed on 6 July, sees Eriksson return to English football 12 months after standing down as manager of the national team, a role that he held for five years. The veteran Swedish coach replaces Stuart Pearce as Manchester City manager.

Senior corporate partner David Hull led the team for Hammonds during the contract negotiations. Hull also took a headline role on the sale of the club, which was completed last week, with support from London corporate partner Giles Distin.

Under the terms of the deal, UKSIL will control just under the 75% of the club that is required to claim full ownership. Denton Wilde Sapte acted for Manchester City with corporate partners Candice Chapman and Richard Barham in the lead roles.

Commenting on the deal, Distin said: "[Hammonds] has seen a very substantial increase in takeover activity over the last year and this was very much a joint effort between our London and Manchester offices."

The deal underlines Hammonds' profile in the sports sector with the firm last year acting on the closely-watched £62.6m takeover of Aston Villa by US tycoon Randy Lerner.
