US duo Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom and Baker Botts have bagged plum roles on the $53bn (£25.8bn) merger of oil giants GlobalSantaFe and Transocean, it was announced yesterday (23 July).

Transocean turned to Texas' Baker Botts, while Skadden is advising GlobalSantaFe, fielding teams out of its Houston, Los Angeles and Washington DC offices, as well as its New York hub. Corporate partner Peter Atkins, who is based in New York, is spearheading the team for the Manhattan law firm.

Other partners involved include Houston M&A partner Frank Bayouth and Los Angeles banking partner Kristine Dunn.

The deal continues a run of big-ticket deals on which Skadden has managed to cash in, as M&A continues to motor on both sides of the Atlantic.

Other notable roles Skadden has won in the US recently include advising Alcoa on its $33bn (£16.5bn) hostile bid for rival Alcan, announced in May. New York corporate partners David Fox, Margaret Wolff and Neil Stronski headed the Skadden team on that deal.

Meanwhile, the firm's City practice bagged a key mandate acting for Qatari investment group Delta Two on its £12bn bid for supermarket giant Sainsbury's.
