The former head of Shearman & Sterling's derivatives and structured finance practice has rejoined the firm.

Holland West, who retired from Shearman in 2005, has returned to the firm's New York office as of counsel. He advises on derivatives, structure products, capital markets and commodities work as well as a range of investment management issues.

His hire coincides with the US law firm further bolstering its Manhattan derivatives practice with the appointment of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton lawyer Geoffrey Goldman.

Goldman, who has broad experience of structuring over-the-counter derivatives transactions, including advising issuers and underwriters on synthetic collateralised debt obligations, has joined Shearman as counsel.

Commenting on the hires, Shearman senior partner Rohan Weerasinghe said: "We are pleased to welcome Holland back to the firm and to have Geoff join us as well. Their experience and expertise in the derivatives and structured products practice strengthens our offerings in this significant and growing field."

He added: "Holland also adds substantial depth to our private funds practice."
