Former Alcatel-Lucent general counsel Richard Pithcaethly has bagged a role as vice president and UK legal director for mobile phone giant Motorola, Legal Week can reveal.

Pithcaethly, who was law vice president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Lucent for nine years before it merged with Paris-based communications giant Alcatel last year, joined Motorola in August. He is now based at the company's UK headquarters in Reading.

Pithcaethly replaces former Motorola UK legal director Palwinder Hare, who quit earlier this year after a seven-year spell at the US company.

In his new role, Pithcaethly will report to Maryann Clifford, head of ethics and compliance for EMEA.

Clifford stepped in to plug the gap left after Hare's departure by acting as interim UK legal director but is now based in Chicago at Motorola's head office.

The appointment of Pithcaethly comes after the US-based mobile giant slashed its legal spend two years ago by halving its roster of advisers in Europe.

The shake-up saw Motorola retain Ashurst and CMS Cameron McKenna in the UK and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, White & Case and Baker & McKenzie for European work.

Meanwhile, Alcatel-Lucent general counsel Pascal Durand-Barthez has quit the telecoms company to join Linklaters' Paris M&A practice.

Durand-Barthez first joined Alcatel legacy business Compagnie Generale d'Electricite in 1977 and was general counsel of Alcatel between 1996 and 2006, later becoming corporate secretary of Alcatel-Lucent.

He has been replaced by former Lucent deputy general counsel and chief litigation counsel Steve Reynolds but will retain his role as secretary to the board.
