McDermott Will & Emery is set to lose another partner from its London arm with intellectual property (IP) head Larry Cohen leaving to join rival US practice Latham & Watkins.
Cohen, whose practice covers contentious IP, including patent and trademark work, handed in his notice at McDermott earlier this week. McDermott today (18 October) confirmed the departure of Cohen, who is still in discussions over its leaving date.
The latest departure will leave McDermott's City IP team with Hiroshi Sheraton as its sole partner, alongside patent attorney Justin Hill and 12 further fee earners.
Cohen's departure is the latest in a series of senior moves from McDermott's City base, with former corporate head William Charnley last month quitting to join the UK arm of Anglo American giant Mayer Brown.
McDermott has now seen a dozen partners leave its London office in just over a year, with other notable departures including employment head Fraser Younson, who joined Berwin Leighton Paisner, and litigator and former managing partner John Reynolds, now at White & Case.
McDermott recently named tax partner Peter Nias as its new local senior partner, acting alongside City managing partner David Dalgarno. McDermott indicated that it is now looking externally to expand the group.
Commenting on the new hire, Latham City chief Andrew Moyle said: "[Cohen] brings a wealth of expertise in contentious as well as non-contentious intellectual property matters [and his] credentials as an IP litigator, coupled with his leadership and entrepreneurial skills, will see him play an important role in the further development of our litigation capability in London."
