Former SABMiller deputy legal chief Chris Vaughn has been named as the first-ever general counsel of UK construction giant Balfour Beatty.

Vaughn took on his new role at Balfour Beatty earlier this month and now heads up the company's team of 30 lawyers worldwide, reporting to chief executive Ian Tyler.

Current head of legal services Frank McCormack and company secretary Chris Pearson have both retained their positions but will now report to Vaughn, who quit SABMiller this summer.

In July the brewing giant named former Lovells partner Stephen Jones – who was SABMiller relationship partner at the top 10 City law firm – as its new deputy general counsel.

That came after his predecessor as Lovells' relationship partner for the client, John Davidson, joined the drinks company in 2006 as general counsel and company secretary.

Balfour Beatty is the largest construction company in the UK. Recent activity includes the £33m takeover of facilities infrastructure company Covien, announced last week by Tyler, and the acquisition of construction broker Cowlin Group last year in a deal worth £53m.
