Allen & Overy (A&O) projects chief Graham Vinter has quit the magic circle giant to take up the role of general counsel at BG Group, it has emerged today (23 October).

London-based partner Vinter – who led A&O's global projects, energy and infrastructure group – will oversee a 100-lawyer global team and will also sit on the energy production and distribution company's general executive committee.

Meanwhile, A&O global infrastructure head Anne Baldock, who previously served on the firm's board for six years, will replace Vinter at the helm of the City giant's projects team.

At BG, Vinter replaces acting general counsel Keith Hubber, who took on the role in May from former general counsel Stefan Ricketts, and will report to chief executive Frank Chapman.

It is understood the respected projects lawyer was aiming to retire from private practice within the next two years before accepting the offer to join BG following several months of negotiations with the company.

The move nonetheless deals a blow to A&O as Vinter has been instrumental in helping A&O surge to the top of the global projects rankings in recent years.

Notably, Vinter was unaffected as A&O last year slashed the number of equity points handed out to its City projects partners in a bid to increase the overall profitability of the practice.

Commenting on the departure of Vinter, A&O senior partner Guy Beringer said: "This is an outstanding opportunity for Graham and we will be sorry to see him leave us. His appointment is a testament to the reputation and profile that A&O's projects, energy and infrastructure group enjoys in the market."

Beringer added: "We are also extremely fortunate to have someone of Anne's calibre able to step into this role and we know that, under her leadership, our market-leading team will continue to go from strength to strength."
