Private equity giant 3i has appointed General Electric (GE) senior managing director Kevin Dunn as its new general counsel, replacing outgoing incumbent Tony Brierley, who is to retire.

Brierley, the veteran general counsel who has been at 3i for 24 years after joining the in-house legal team in 1983, steps down from his role today (1 November).

Dunn previously ran the European leveraged finance business for GE's commercial finance division and will now have responsibility for 3i's in-house legal department of 16 lawyers, as well as overseeing the its compliance and internal audit functions.

Dunn joined GE in 2002 and before stepping up to the senior director role served as European general counsel of GE Commercial Finance, when he built its regional legal team to around 75 lawyers in 11 countries.

Prior to joining the international conglomerate in 2002 Dunn had stints a finance and banking partner with top 20 City firm Travers Smith and US giant Latham & Watkins.

Commenting on the appointment, 3i chairman Baroness Hogg said: "Kevin brings with him outstanding experience and expertise, which will help build on 3i's international success to date."

3i is one of the largest private equity and venture capital firms in the world. Yesterday (31 October) the group announced that it planned to invest more than $700m ($336m) in Asia over coming years, with a particular focus on the energy sector.
