Jones Day is attempting to break into the London debt capital markets with a hire from Nomura International's in-house legal team.

Andrew Chen joined the London office this week (5 November) from the Japanese bank where he was director and head of the debt capital markets legal team.

Chen becomes the first English-qualified debt capital markets partner in Jones Day's London office and only the firm's third debt capital markets partner in Europe. The firm already has five partners and 14 associates on the equity capital markets side in London alone.

At Nomura, Chen was responsible for advising on new issues and structuring capital markets transactions with particular experience in Asian and European transactions.

Before joining Nomura he was a senior associate at Allen & Overy in London where he also spent seven months on a secondment to the debt transaction management group of Credit Suisse First Boston in Laondon.

Jones Day's debt capital markets lawyers in Europe work with banks including JP Morgan Cazenove, Standard Bank and Jefferies as well as Deutsche Bank.

Giles Elliott, co-head of Jones Day's capital markets practice, told Legal Week: "Andrew is the start of us building a proper platform on the debt capital markets side. We have an established capital markets practice and US securities practice in London but he will be the first partner on the debt capital markets side so we are looking to recruit and build up around him."
