Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton has elected eight new partners and a raft of counsel in its latest promotion round – although the firm's London arm misses out on the promotions altogether.

The New York leader announced today (12 November) that it had made up 11 new counsel as well as the eight partners, with those given the nod stepping up to their new roles from 1 January, 2008.

Although Cleary's City arm did not receive any promotions, as the office did not have any eligible candidates, three of the new partners are in Europe, with Moscow, Paris and Milan all picking up one new partner apiece. Two are made up in the firm's Manhattan hub, while Washington DC gains three new partners.

The promotions bring the total number of partners at Cleary to 196. Meanwhile, the firm now has 50 lawyers at the counsel rank, with promotions coming in Brussels, Germany, Paris and Italy.

Cleary becomes the latest US firm to announce its promotions, with Chicago outfit Kirkland & Ellis last month making up 62 of its associates. However, the new partners at Kirkland do not automatically join the firm's equity.

The news comes against the backdrop of a US pay war, with a number of Manhattan firms announcing special one-off bonuses in addition to their traditional year-end payouts. Following recent hikes, a one-year qualified associate at Cleary can now take home more than $200,000 (£96,000), while a senior associate can rake in $420,000 (£201,000).
